Aarohan’s Project Asha is dedicated entirely to primary level children who do not attend school. Through this project children are prepared to take entrance tests for classes I to V and are assisted in the subsequent admission process.Project Asha also works with children who once dropped out of school and provides them with academic support and encouragement to return to mainstream schooling.
As the majority of these children come from slum-dwelling families that live below the poverty line, their home environment does not provide them with the academic preparation that is needed for them to pass these aforementioned entrance tests- a gap that Project Asha aims to cover.
In addition, by providing them with quality training and ensuring that they enter a class that corresponds to their abilities, these children cope better and are less likely to drop-out in the future.

Project Asha is run in two main phases: |
Phase I- Literacy Group: |
This component of Project Asha is dedicated to providing the children with tuition and academic preparation for upcoming entrance exams into MCD schools: |
-
Daily entrance exam preparation classes are held.
-
Children are divided into groups based on their academic levels and trained in subjects that they will be tested in.
-
The project presently has a daily attendance of approximately 120 children.
-
The children are provided with a nutritious snack and basic study materials such as three-in-one copy books, pencils etc.
|
Phase II- Field Assistance in Admission Procedures: |
This second phase of Project Asha begins at the start of the yearly admission cycle. Once the children are prepared to take the entrance examinations, Aarohan staff accompanies them to their local MCD school and assists in the completion of paperwork and documentation that is involved in the admission of the child. |
-
Affidavits are made for each child seeking admission in MCD schools.
-
Aarohan staff then accompanies the children and their parents to the school itself and assists in the filling of required forms, submission of necessary documents etc.
-
The children are then informed of the date of the entrance examination and are accompanied to their exams by Aarohan staff.
-
This field assistance service is also provided to children who are not attending classes at Aarohan, but seek our assistance in completing application procedures.
|
Objectives : |
-
To provide a crash-course nursery experience to primary level children so that they may enter schools well prepared.
-
To make a child’s first steps into the schooling process as smooth and simple as possible by providing academic, logistical and emotional support.
-
To reduce drop-out rates either by preparing students to enter and remain in school, or help those who have already dropped out to regain admission in school.
-
To assist parents through the admission process so that they may gain the confidence to approach mainstream educational institutions, replicate it with their other children and be more encouraged to invest time and effort into their child’s education at present and at secondary and graduate levels as well.
