How We Work |
Aarohan wants every child to realize that they have a right to a mainstream standard of education. To make this possible, we not only provide academic support to our students but also work with their parents, larger community and government schools so that their academic pursuit is supported in every area of their lives. Aarohan’s work begins by visitings slum communities where surveys are conducted to identify the children who are school drop-outs or have never been to school. These children and their parents aware of the fact that they have a right to education. These children are than brought to Aarohan and are made a part of our Asha group. The level of learning which the child has is determined and they are prepared to take entrance exams in Govt. schools. By harmonizing the main support networks of each child’s life -parents, community and school- we first assist children to gain admission in schools and then provide the academic and logistical support for them to continue and complete their schooling successfully. |
PARENTS: PARTNERS IN CHANGE: |
Aarohan lays emphasis on working with parents and members of the community to which the children belong and actively involves them as partners in the creation of a learning environment for their children. With a large number of illiterate parents living below the poverty line. Their priority for their children is earning, not education. It is here that Aarohan offers the holistic support which their parents cannot provide. However, through regular parent- teacher meetings, follow-up home visits and motivation/recruitment camps we are particular about actively involving parents in their child’s development. |
ASSISTING IN ADMISSIONS:
|
Intimidated by the admission procedure, illiterate parents often feel discouraged and do not even attempt to put their child in school. Every year at admission time, Aarohan staff assists parents in the procedures for admission of their children into school. Older children, who have never been to school are tutored for a year and then admitted into classes that match their level. Since 2005, we have admitted over 750 children into the schools. |
EARLY INTODUCTION TO STRUCTURED LEARNING:
|
We believe that early exposure to education is a must for parent and child and therefore run a nursery school in the Jagadamaba Camp slum area in Sheikh Sarai, New Delhi. Beginning early, we prepare children from the ages of 3 to 5 years for a good start to school. Teaching through play, coaching them on personal hygiene and social skills, these children are more prepared to enter a structured learning system. This has become our flagship project.
|
PROVIDING AN ACADEMIC SUPPORT SYSTEM: |
Once a child is admitted into the school, we provide the subsequent academic support after school hours, which they need to cope-up with their syllabus, with a mid-day meal/snacks. Our main aim is to strengthen each child’s basic reading, writing and arithmetic through our after-school hours support system so that they are less likely to feel overwhelmed and discontinue their schools. |
BEYOND ACADEMICS:
|
With the goal of providing holistic development of each child, our students are taught etiquette and social decorum and given resposibilities of the organization as well. On numerous occasions, we have watched our children show themselves to be confident, self-assured young people who can participate on public platforms with ease. In addition to education we provide vocational training to entitle them for a respectful living/earning.
